Visit the Local Art Galleries

Downtown has a plentiful supply of galleries that are free and open to the public.  From the recently opened Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art to the Center for the Visual Arts to the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum perched on east hill.

Ice Skating on the 400 Block

Enjoy the beautiful sights of the River District while ice skating on the 400 Block.  Rentals are available at Shephard and Schaller Sporting Goods.  If you get too cold there is even a warming shelter!

Retail Therapy

If you’re looking for a cure to cabin fever there is no better place to visit for some retail therapy.  There is a something for everyone in downtown Wausau from small boutiques, to sporting goods to records to home décor.  One of the best parts is that you’re supporting our local economy by shopping at these local stores!

See a Show at the Grand Theater

Spend your evening taking in a show in the historic Grand Theater located in the heart of downtown. The Grand features both nationally touring and community productions. And there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby to refuel you after the show.

Learn About the Past

Visit one of the many museums in the River District to learn more about Wausau’s rich history.  If you are looking for local history, check out the Marathon County Historical Society and Yawkey house.  If you’re interested in cultural history visit the Laotian museum or if dinosaurs and prehistoric artifacts are more your interest, visit Colossal Fossils, both located inside the Wausau Center Mall.

Date Night

Take your significant other out for a warm romantic meal on a chilly winter evening.  With a wide variety of options ranging from Farm to table to Cajun to Chinese to American fusion, there is something for anyone’s palette.

Coffee and Sweets

Nothing is better than some caffeine and sugar during the short winter days and long nights!  Stop by one of the wonderful coffee and desserts shops downtown to keep you going.

Get Pampered

Treat yourself with spa treatments at Dayspring Heath Spa, Terradea, Studio E, or Apex Wellness.  Destress from the holiday season and enjoy taking some time out of the day for yourself.

Live Music

There is never a shortage of live music in Wausau, especially downtown.  Stop by any of the local bars and pubs for some amazing music from both local and touring acts.  Check their Facebook pages and websites for full schedules.
