The city started on road improvements on 2nd Avenue in the near west side in early June with the hope that it will spur even more rehabilitation and improvement with the area between Third Avenue and the Wisconsin River. New improvements include streetlamps, decorative rock features, paver-lined sidewalks, benches, dozens of new trees and tree grates, along with the first and only table top intersection in town. Businesses within the near west side will be open during normal business hours like before. During construction participating businesses will be offering a promotional punch card. Patrons receive a punch for each visit to a business, once complete the card can be mailed or returned to the Wausau River District office for a drawing every two weeks with a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to a participating business.
