Make sure you have your skates ready - Wausau's ice rinks are expected to be ready for use by this weekend.
The Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has been busy getting the rinks ready, spraying water down to create additional layers of ice.
In addition to the locations on the 400 Block and in Marathon Park, there's now an ice rink in Thom Field on Wausau's northern side. Operations Manager Bob Stephens said mother nature has delayed the openings of the ice skating destinations.
"We kind of got a late start this year, we didn't get any snow, which is what's needed to make the base," Stephens explained. "We started last week building the base, once we did get that layer of initial snow, and then on top of that snow we've been adding water since."
Stephens said the ice rink at Thom Field is the result of an effort from some northeast side residents made a push for a rink to be installed there after the one at Riverview Elementary was eliminated.
Stephens said making sure all three locations have enough ice for use is an ongoing process throughout the entire winter.
